The modification in timing of the evaluation of blood smears out of every 2 weeks to on a monthly basis might have led to an underestimation of the incidence of an infection after infancy, but it would not have thereafter affected the persistent plateau. The entire cumulative incidence rates of infection, severe malaria, and mild high-density contamination were, respectively, 2.41 , 0.05 , and 0.26 episodes per child-yr. The incidence prices of infection and severe malaria are similar to those that have been reported in other areas of high transmitting19,20 .
